The Dominican Republic is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Caribbean. Part of this island belongs to Haiti. In addition to tourism – the economic sector No. 1 – the country lives for the most part of agricultural products. This includes the rum production. The republic is one of the leading countries of rum. In 1453, Christopher Columbus brought sugar cane to the Caribbean. From the 18th century, sugarcane plantations and their products contributed to social and economic advancement. In the middle of the 19th century Don Andrés BRUGAL Montaner (1888), Don Erasmo BERMÚDEZ (1852) and Julián BARCELÓ (1930) began to experiment in their own distilleries. Today, these three varieties are among the best known in the Dominican Republic, resp. of the world. Rum is a Dominican national drink. In addition to the already mentioned many other varieties that are produced here. It is distilled by a natural process and stored in American oak barrels.
