Balvenie: Founded: 1892 pronunciation: “Balwénie” meaning: settlement of happiness status: in production

The Balvenie distillery is located in the immediate vicinity of the big neighbour Glenfiddich. It is located at the entrance to the secret Scottish whisky capital of Dufftown. It owes its name to the nearby Balvenie Castle. This 13th century castle, destroyed and rebuilt several times, was not repaired at the beginning of the 18th century, but the owner built a new mansion nearby, the New Balvenie House with stones of the Castle. In 1892 William Grant bought the dilapidated estate together with the land and converted it into a distillery with his 9 children.
The whisky is the most honey-toned malt in style. It matures well, is mostly of medium weight and has signs of exotic fruits. Legendary is the 21-year-old Balvenie, who matured in bourbon barrels for another six to twelve months in Port-Wood barrels.
