Bunnahabhain: Founded: 1881 Debate: “Bunn-a-hawen” Meaning: estuary Status: in production

Distillerie Bunnahabhain is located in a bay of Islay Sound. The former workers’ houses can now be rented as holiday apartments. The company was founded when the Greenless brothers could not sell the harvested barley. Together with William Robertson they first built a road and then a distillery, which was put into operation in 1883. The currents in the Sound of Islay are often dangerous and therefore a seaway was not a big option. Under the Edrington Group (1999-2003), only a few weeks per year were produced that at least every year they had whisky!
The whisky is in style as un peaty: light, fresh, malty, sweet, nutty and only slightly salty and as peaty: sweet and yet salty, peaty, hay and seaweed.
