Balblair: Foundation: 1790 Debate: “Bal-bläär” Meaning: settlement in the plain Status: in operation

The Balblair distillery is very close to the Glenmorangie distillery, between Dornach Firth and Edderton. Founded in 1790 by John Ross, it is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. Balblair has one of the oldest archives found in Scottish distilleries. It also houses a 200-year-old accounting department. In 1894 the distillery got a new owner, a wine and spirits merchant named Alexander Cowan, because of an expiring lease. In 1896 the new owner rebuilt Balblair completely. The distillery still has the appearance it had when Cowan built it. In 1910 it was closed down for many years for financial reasons, and only during the Second World War did the British and Norwegian armies use it as accommodation. A visit to Balblair should definitely be planned, as it is one of the most beautiful and original distilleries in Scotland. As there is no visitor centre, a guided tour either starts outside or in case of rain in the meeting room.
The whisky is light in style, aromatic and dry.
