Balmenach: Foundation: 1824 pronunciation: “Bal-me-nach” meaning: farm or settlement in the middle Status: in operation

The Balmenach Distillery is located in the hills of Cromdale (Hills of Cromdale), which rise behind the small village of the same name near the River Spey. For many decades Balmenach has been the last remaining distillery in this westernmost area of Speyside. James McGregor was a farmer, black burner and whisky smuggler. He understood the hint of the new whisky-burning law for a small fee. He was one of the first in Scotland to obtain a licence in 1824. In 1880 he had the distillery connected to the Inverness-Edinburgh railway line with a railway siding. Thanks to this move, the market chances for the distillery increased significantly.
The whisky is slightly peaty, nutty and aromatic in style.
