Caol Ila: Founded: 1846 Pronunciation: “Kool-Ila” Meaning: Sound of Islay Status: in operation

If one arrives in Port Askaig, one has a nice view to the distillery Caol Ila standing directly at the Islay Sund. It is also the largest distillery on the queen of the whisky islands. This warehouse is the only building that has remained after the reconstruction and extension (1974-1974). Caol Ila produces the whisky and the New Make is then transported directly to the mainland where it is bottled in barrels.
The whisky is in the style of the peaty ones: oily, peaty, tobacco, pepper, round and long. For the slightly peaty ones: oily, sweetish and a little bitter, peppery, seaweed and not very long.
