Cambus: foundation: 1806 Malt Distillerie 1823 Grain Distillerie not documented pronunciation: “Kämbes” meaning: river bend also name of the village Status: shut down 1993

Cambus was one of the first Grain distilleries in Scotland. In 1906 there was a court case which was decisive for the whisky industry. The case “What is Whiskey” – really written with ey – has shown that not only malts, but also grains and blends can be called “whisky”. Cambus was closed by the UDV in 1993. Near the old distillery building is the huge warehouse complex “Blackgrange”. It is considered to be the largest in Europe. There Diageo stores more than three million whisky barrels!
The whisky was mostly used for blends and is rarely available from independent bottlers..
