Cardhu: Foundation: 1824 Debate: “Kardhu” Meaning: “black rock* Status: in operation

The distillery Cardhu – meanwhile also Cardow – is situated on the northern bank of the Spey between Cardow and Upper Knockando. Since 1811, whisky has been distilled by Helen and John Cummings. To distract state attention, Helen always baked bread when whisky was distilled. After several convictions for black distilling, they applied for the licence in 1824 and received it. In 1893 it passed to Johnny Walker and Sons Ltd, where Helen’s grandson was director. Even today Cardhu gives the Johnny Walker Red Label its soft and sweet core. Since 1997 she belongs to Diageo.
The whisky is malty in style, sweet and has light smoky notes.
