Deanston: Founded: 1965 Pronunciation: “Diinsten” Meaning: “the hill fortress* Status: in operation
The Deanston distillery is located near the town of Doune on the imaginary Lowland/Highland line. The former cotton mill was powered by Teith’s high quality water and its quality prompted the operators to convert the building into a distillery. It experienced an absolute heyday at the beginning of the seventies under Invergordon. This boom ebbed away and it was closed in the meantime a few years and only in 1991 by Burn Stewart again put into operation and developed, so that also Gin and vodka can be produced.
The whisky is in style rather a “Lowlander” light, somewhat nutty with malty sweetness.
