Inchmoan: Founded: 1965 Debate: “Insch-murrin” Meaning: “Island of peat” Status: in operation
The whisky Inchmoan, Inchmurrin, Croftengea, Old Rhosdhu, Craiglodge and Loch Lomond is produced in the Distillery Loch Lomond. This is located in the town of Alexandria at the southern end of Lake Loch Lomond. It is the only distillery that produces under one roof in a continuous still (since 1994) Grain whisky and in two conventional pot stills and four special stills Malt-Whisky. The special stills have perforated plates which, depending on the arrangement, produce different flavours as they almost have the effect of a small still. The last special stills installed in 2007/08 are extensions which have significantly more capacity. This prompted the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) to change its guidelines in 2009 so that this special still produced whisky does not meet the specifications for Scotch Malt Whisky – it should be noted that Loch Lomond is not a member of the SWA.
The whisky is spicy in style, peaty, smoky and toffee.
