In Neuseeland wird kaum eigener Whisky hergestellt, da die Leute lieber schottischen oder amerikanischen Whisky geniessen. Dies kommt nicht zuletzt davon, dass man munkelt die Schotten und Iren hätten die neuseeländische Regierung bei einem 1875 erlassenen Gesetz bezüglich der Einfuhren „gut beraten“. Der Milford wurde ehemals in der Distillerie Wilson in Dunedin (vom alten Namen Edinburgh’s abgeleitet) unter dem Namen Lammerslaw produziert.
