Laphroaig Founded: 1815 Pronunciation: “La-froig” Meaning: Beautiful lowland at the wide bay Status: in operation

Laphroaig, as the Gaelic name already suggests, the distillery is situated in a beautiful little bay. Laphroaig is the most western distillery in the south of Islay. It can be reached from Port Ellen via a narrow road. A special feature of Laphroaig is that today a good 10% of the malt is again produced in its own floor maltings. “One loves him, or one hates him” – certainly hits the nail on the head. The very medicinal taste of Laphroaig makes it unique.
The whisky is smoky in style, peaty, salty and yet sweet (sherry), seaweed, medicinal and long. Its character has been compared to such unsightly things as disinfectants and mouthwashes.
