Glenury Royal: Foundation: 1824 Debate: “Glen-urie Royel” Meaning: “Valley of the yews* Status: closed 1985

The Distillery Glenury Royal stood in the harbour town of Stonehaven. Captain Barclay, the founder, had good relations to the royal court as a member of parliament and King William IV gave it the addition Royal in 1835. He was Laird of Ury and an excellent marathon and long distance runner and as such also in the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. In 1985 the distillery was shut down by the SMD because their whisky no longer fitted into the concept of this large conglomerate and finally in 1992 the UDV returned the license and sold everything. Today, most buildings are apartment buildings.
The whisky is light in style, oily, malty-sweet, honey and with little smoke.
