Benriach: Foundation: 1826 Debate: “Ben-riach” Meaning: spotted mountain Status: in operation

The Benriach distillery is located south of Elgin in the heart of Speyside. The distillery built by John Duff was transferred to the neighbouring distillery Longmorn in the same year. Whisky production was stopped in 1900, but the malt house was used until 1999. In 1965 the Glenlivet Group rebuilt the distillery. Through mergers it fell into the hands of Pernod Ricard, which wanted to close Benriach as a result of ownership of many distilleries. In 2004 the rescue came through Billy Walker, Wayne Keiswetter and Geoff Buff. They took over the distillery as Benriach Distillery Company and produced whisky again.
The whisky is dry, fruity and slightly sweet in style, but there are also very peaty and smoky bottlings.
