Panama is best known for its canal, opened in 1914, one of the most important waterways in the world. Through this artificial canal you don’t have to sail around Cape Horn or over the Strait of Magellan anymore. Since 2000 Panama manages the canal alone and it is the main source of income of the country. In addition, there is fishing (crabs and shrimps) and agriculture with bananas, sugar cane, rice, corn, pineapple and coffee. Rum from Panama has only been available since 1936, when the only sugar cane mill owner gave his sons permission to distil. Within a very short time, Panama Rum made a name for itself.
