Haiti, together with the Dominican Republic, forms the peninsula of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. It was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus and was first Spanish and later French colony. Once Haiti was the richest colony in France, but today it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The repurchase of the colonial power, political instability, conversion of agriculture to export, trade agreements and years of mismanagement and the exodus of talent have made Haiti the poorhouse of America. About 2/3 of the population lives from agriculture, but large areas have been lost due to erosion and deforestation. Main products are coffee, mangoes, sugar cane products, wood and the production of the Vetiver oil for the perfume production, aromatherapy and naturopathy.

The most famous rum from Haiti is certainly the Barbancourt.
