Port wine finds its origin Douro valley in today’s Portugal. This area was already known in Roman times for noble wines and was therefore quickly incorporated into the Roman Empire. The prospects were so promising that at the Douro estuary the settlement Cale was founded with the port Portus Cale, from which later the name Porto and ultimately also the country name Portugal derived.
