Arran: Founded: 1990/1995 pronunciation: “Ärren” meaning: place of the pointed hills + name of the island Status: in operation

Since 1938, no whisky has officially been distilled on the island of Arran. Only Harold J. Currie, then director of Chivas Brothers, fulfilled a dream and built the distillery in Lochranza in the north of Arran in 1990. But because a breeding pair of eagles of the rare genus Golden Eagles had settled in the buildings under construction, the construction work was stopped until after the birth of the young eagles. Thus the distillery was opened on 17 August 1995. The eagle couple flew over the celebration and adorned the Arran logo, bottles and packaging.
There is Arran Dry Whisky, which has dark chocolate, light smoky and malt notes, and unpeeled Whisky, which has soft, creamy, sweet, fruity, spicy and honey notes.
