Glenglassaugh: Foundation: 1975 Pronunciation: “Glen-glass-och” Meaning: “Valley of the grey-green square* Status: in operation

The Distillery Glenglassaugh is situated directly on the coast behind the ruins of an old windmill in Portsoy. It was closed again and again, once even for almost 40 years. As a result, it was cheaper to tear everything down and rebuild it. Because when the Dutch Scaent Group bought the distillery after 22 years of closure – nobody believed in a rebirth any more – and with a new licence, its new director Stuart Nickerson was alone and first had to look for a real whisky maker and renovate a lot.
The whisky is not peaty in style: sweetish, fruity, orange, nuts, vanilla and peaty: peat smoke, honey, pineapple, spices.
