In the bay of Port Ellen on Islay, the remains of the former distillery can still be clearly seen. Unfortunately, only the warehouses, the kiln, and a few auxiliary buildings remain. Behind these stands the imposing Port Ellen malting plant, which has been in operation since 1973, supplying several Islay distilleries with malt. Since its closure in 1983, the distillery has gained great popularity. The remaining whisky is now traded at very high prices.

Port Ellen has a very peppery note similar to Talisker, with the typical salty-smoky aroma. Since it became known that the distillery would never be operational again, demand has increased even further.
