Longmorn: Founded: 1894 Pronunciation: “Longmorn” Meaning: “Morgan’s Church or Place of the Holy Man” Status: operational
The Longmorn distillery is located slightly south of Elgin. It was built on the site where the chapel of the well-known and revered hermit Morgan once stood. After his death, the chapel was first converted into a mill and eventually integrated into the distillery building. For a long time, it was referred to as the twin of BenRiach, as both distilleries were owned by the same founder and are located close to each other. Like others, he had to mortgage a large part of the shares to the bank after the Pattison-Elder company’s bankruptcy. The bank then sold the distillery to the Grant family, who owned it until 1977, after which it passed to Pernod Ricard via Seagram in 2001. Much of the whisky is used in Chivas Regal, Ballantine’s, and Royal Salute, with only a small portion being bottled as Single Malt.
The whisky’s style is oily, malty, fruity, aromatic, slightly sweet, smooth, and long.
