Loch Lomond: Founded: 1965 Pronunciation: “Loch Lomend” Meaning: “Name of the nearby lake” Status: operational
The whisky Loch Lomond, along with Inchmoan, Inchmurrin, Croftengea, Old Rhosdhu, and Craiglodge, is produced at the Loch Lomond Distillery. This distillery is located in the town of Alexandria at the southern end of Loch Lomond. It is the only distillery that produces both grain whisky in a continuous still (since 1994) and malt whisky in two conventional pot stills and four special stills, all under one roof. The special stills have perforated plates that can be arranged in different ways to produce various flavors, almost like a small still. The last special stills, installed in 2007/08, are expansions that significantly increased capacity. This led the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) to change its guidelines in 2009, stating that whisky produced in this type of still does not meet the specifications for Scotch malt whisky. It is worth noting that Loch Lomond is not a member of the SWA.
The whisky’s style is oaky, vanilla, fruity, malty, and slightly sweet.
