Founded: 1772 Pronunciation: “Littl-mill” Meaning: small mill Status: Closed in 1992; partially demolished in 1996; burned down in 2004; demolished in 2005
The distillery Littlemill was located on the north bank of the Clyde in Bowling. However, it did not source its water from the Clyde but from the Kilpatrick Hills, which are part of the Highlands. The distillery itself was located in the Lowlands region. The origins of the distillery officially date back to 1772, but it is believed that distillation occurred at the same site as early as 1750. Therefore, it is considered one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, along with Strathisla and Glenturret.
