Bruichladdich: Founded: 1881 Debate: “Bruk-läddie” Meaning: Mountains Status: in production
The Bruichladdich Distillery was already one of the most modern at the time of its foundation, as it was planned as such from the very beginning. William Harvey, a son of the founder Barnett, also took care of it until his death in 1937, when it was shut down in 1927. In 1995, with the takeover of Whyte&Mackay (Beam Inc), it was thought that another distillery would be closed forever, but fortunately not, as a group led by Murray McDavid Ltd bought the distillery at the end of 2000 and resumed production six months later. Especially for Bruichladdich, the wheat used is only grown in Scotland or, if the name Islay is used, only on Islay. Bruichladdich has contracts and partnerships with the farmers, so you are also informed about soil, texture, wind and microclimate of the fields.
The whisky is of the style of the non peaty ones: mild, aromatic, honey, malty and fruity and of the peaty ones: aromatic, fruity, vanilla, a little peppery and smoky.
