Saint Croix is the most populated island of the Virgin Islands, which belong to the USA. In the 17th century the island became prosperous with the cultivation of tobacco, cotton and sugar cane. In 1917 the Americans bought the Virgin Islands from the Danes for 15 million gold dollars so that it could not become a base for German submarines. In the meantime, there is practically no sugar cane left on the island and molasses is even imported for rum production.

The best-known brand is Cruzan, which has been produced since 1760 in the eighth generation by the Nelthropp family, partly still by hand. The name Cruzan comes from the (original) inhabitants of the island St. Croix, who are called Crucians.
